The Benefits of Having an AED in The Home

Cardiac arrest is a silent predator that doesn’t discriminate on who and what age its 475,000 deadly victims will be each year in America. That’s one person every two minutes! An automated external defibrillator (AED) can be the determining factor between life and death when you or a loved one goes into SCA (sudden cardiac arrest)  - especially when every minute is critical in the chances of survival. As each minute passes by before the administration of an AED, the chances of survival decreases by 7 - 10%.

It’s easy to assume that SCA is more likely to happen in hospitals, at work, or in huge event venues. In fact, almost 70% of all out-of-hospitals cardiac arrests happen at home. If that’s not reason enough to persuade you that it’s essential to have an AED at home to increase the chances of survival after SCA, there are other benefits to keep in mind:

  • They’re User-Friendly. You don’t need to be a professional in order to administer and use an AED. In fact, the process is simple. The machine is light-weight and portable and uses a clear voice or direction that will guide you as to when to perform the defibrillation - and it takes care of the rest automatically.  The AED will track the heartbeat of the distressed person and determine what type of abnormal heartbeat, if any, is present. If the heartbeat is life-threatening (beating above 180 beats per minute or suffering from ventricular fibrillation) the AED will advise you to perform the shock. It will not shock a normal beating heart.
  • AEDs Save Lives. This reason doesn’t need a bunch of facts to back it up because it’s beyond a doubt that when CPR, as well as an AED, are administered during a cardiac arrest, the chances of survival are thoroughly increased. We will tell you, however, that while the national survival average is 10%, with an AED that number can be as high as 75%. Instead of having to wait for an ambulance or EMT to arrive and watching the clock while hoping your loved one will survive, with an at-home AED, you get to be the deciding factor between life or death. By putting off the purchase, especially if a member of your household has been told by a medical practitioner that they are more likely to suffer from an SCA, you won’t live the rest of your life with regret and guilt when something does happen.
  • You Can Save Your Family Before EMS Can. It can take even up to 15-20 minutes for EMS staff to make it to your home - whether you live in a small town or a big city, there will always be other emergencies. Every minute is crucial when having a cardiac arrest and every minute that goes by decreases the chance of survival. Even if emergency services can get to your home in time to save your life, the chances of being resuscitated with full cognitive ability is highly challenged as the chance of brain damage is huge with each second that passes.
  • We’re All a Little Stressed. The world has changed and 2020 has already proved to be a stressful year. When we have no idea how the rest of the year will turn out - and the economy is quickly crashing around us - being a little stressed is a bit of an understatement. Our hearts are being pushed to the max and it’s only a matter of time before our bodies begin to shut down. Now is the best time to protect and prevent the inevitable. It’s almost impossible to predict an SCA. Many people accidentally ignore the few signs that our bodies show us before a cardiac arrest or misinterpret it as heartburn, etc. Attending our physician’s office has also become difficult during the current period of social isolation, therefore it is essential that we take the proper steps to take care of our families if the time arises.

There are many other reasons that can be surfaced to try and persuade you into discovering the importance and protection that having an AED in the home provides - but the only one who can make the decision to prevent the death of yourself or your family and friends lies with you. What’s the price of a life worth?

Although it is rare for an insurance company to cover an AED, offers flexible financing and payment plans to make it easier for homeowners to afford these critical life-saving devices.
